Diablo 4 Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items allow players to increase the level of items that can be equipped, such as weapons or armor, as well trinkets above a certain threshold. They can be done at any upgrader NPC with the appropriate currency.
Upgrade components are inserted into equipment to provide bonus effects and attribute bonuses. These are usually slot-restricted but there are some universal upgrades.
Rerolling
In Diablo 4, a player can roll a new upgrade to an item. This is accomplished through the Level Up mechanic, which stops the game and shows the list of four randomly chosen upgrades. To reroll an item players first have to unlock the Reroll Upgrade in the shop. The player can choose the Reroll upgrade at the bottom of their Level Up menu after the upgrade is unlocked. The player can roll 10 times per battle. After rerolling an item, its weight will remain the same. However its base power and upgrades will be reset. After rolling, the item can still be magically enhanced.

Certain sets come with set bonuses which give additional effects if Link wears the entire set. These bonuses are beneficial in certain situations, such as when exploring the Gerudo Desert and in dungeons. The Desert Voe set, for instance, offers a Stealth Up effect that makes it easier to get past enemies.
Universal upgrades can be used on any kind of equipment. These upgrades provide smaller bonuses than those that are restricted to specific types, but they are a lot easier to acquire. Some of these upgrades are gems which can be crafted in the jeweler's workshop, and can be used in any trinket slot. Other upgrade components can only be used in weapon accessories, and offer a small amount of bonus without increasing damage.
Requirements
Upgrades are a key component of enhancing the power and effectiveness of your characters in combat. Upgrades can increase an item's stats, or add a prefix or suffix. The amount of stats an item can upgrade is contingent on its rarity and mark level. Upgrades can be found in dungeons, raids, or purchased from vendors. You can also obtain them as a random item or by taking loot from other players.
There is no real solution to the "not worth it" feeling some players have when upgrading certain items. Ideally, the game would provide more information about an upgrade in its compare interface, for instance "X stats gained, X stats lost." This is not practical to implement because of the complexity of the comparison process. There isn't enough room in the UI to implement it correctly.
An alternative solution is to create a script that checks the upgrade requirements of an item before allowing it to be upgraded. This method is ideal for systems with an extremely small number of upgradable items and simple upgrade dependencies. A sword can be upgraded from Sword+1 to Sword+2. A script could search for the Item Definition attribute for each upgrade, and then change the Item Status to "upgraded" in order to verify that the upgrade was valid.
This option is more flexible, but it does require an additional program. It is not suited for complex systems.
Another option is to let players improve their armor and weapons by applying certain upgrades. These upgrades, called Reforges by some, improve the stats of the item and reduce its cost. The power of reforges differs depending on the type, but the Orb of Transmutation or Orb of Embrace are the most powerful.
Costs
Upgrades can increase the physical strength of equipment, its spell power, and health (for rings and armor) or add an additional bonus effect while in your inventory. You can obtain upgrade elements through crafting or purchase them from vendors. You can also loot or drop them from other players, or collect them as rewards. Upgrade components can be inserted into armor, weapons and trinkets. They can also be attached to gathering tools. Most upgrade components can only be replaced using an Upgrade Extractor. The exception is glyphs that can be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.
Based on the type of item, upgrading an item can cost Dilithium or gold. In addition, many upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of crests and Flightstones required to upgrade an item varies on the level of the gear and the maximum upgrade level is established by Blizzard. The upgrade to the highest level can be costly particularly when you're upgrading PvE gear.
Upgrades can also modify a weapon's ammunition, or damage die size. They can also change its special weapon properties like its bulky or operational property, or its hand requirement. Some upgrades can even change a weapon's appearance.
Before making a choice it is important to consider the cost involved in upgrading an item. You may prefer to make use of your gold to upgrade rare items, but don't spend it on standard or magic-tier items. These items aren't worth upgrading, and rare equipment will soon outclass them.
If you're unsure about whether upgrading is worth it you can ask your guild members for advice. There may be more efficient upgrades for less. It's best to upgrade your equipment as soon as you can, since upgrades will become more costly over time. If you can't afford the cost of upgrading, it might be better to put off the upgrade. This allows you to maximize your potential.
