The item upgrade feature allows players to increase the level for weapons that can be equipped or armor. This improves the stats and may also include buffs or rerolls on an attach.
It is important to note that even though you can upgrade magic and common equipment, it is generally not worth the effort. Rare and Unique equipment will quickly surpass upgraded magic and common gear.
Cost
The player must pay gold to upgrade an item. The cost of upgrading an item is dependent on its current level and the type of upgrade selected. Upgrades to weapons are usually cheaper than upgrades to armor because weapons have lower requirements. The amount of Gold required increases when the item is upgraded to an upper level.
An upgraded item will also come with increased stats, which could boost its performance in many ways. This could mean increasing its attack power and critical strike chance or damage per second. The upgraded item can also provide additional buffs to the unit it is equipped with. These upgrades are able to boost the overall strength of a group or a single unit, and may be a major influence on the gameplay.
The NPC for upgrading items can be found in the game. These NPCs can be found in the major questing areas or capital cities. You can also find item-upgraders in dungeons that feature high-level bosses, and speaking to NPCs in the garrisons of your faction.
The item upgrade system in World of Warcraft provides players with the possibility of upgrading the level of weapons, armor, and trinkets. This process is largely identical to the process of reforging gear in Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor however, instead of using the appropriate currency players need to visit an NPC for upgrading items to complete the process.

Requirements

By selecting the item and pressing the green button with a an arrow for rerolling the player can roll it into an upgradeable item. This will alter the layout of the game and allow players to choose up to six items for "recycling". The item will be replaced by an item of level 1. Rerolled items will not retain their level, or the resources used to upgrade it.
The maximum upgrade level of an item is determined by the item's tier as well as its quality. Uncommon items can be upgraded up to the maximum level of six, while Rare and Epic items can be upgraded to level nine.
